Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp), with partners JB Ferrari, have won first prize in an international competition to design a new children’s emergency unit at the Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland. The 85-bed hospital will feature a terraced inner courtyard with conservatory, which will serve as a protected outside play area, that offers ample natural light and space for plant-life.
Designed for a 180 meter long site, the six-story facility’s highest point will be at it’s main entrance on the corner of Rue du Bugnon and Esplanade. Internal access will be provided through the existing gynecological unit, whose views will be preserved as the new structure steps down to a height of two-stories. Here, building will provide waiting and play areas, with the examination and treatment areas branching off in a comb-like layout. On the roof of this lower portion will be a cafeteria, as well as a public planted terrace that offers additional facilities for play and recreation.
Due to the site’s topography, the patients can access the terrace both at ground level via natural ramps and generous steps that lead from the Esplanade along the facade.
Completion is scheduled for 2019.
